Of all the antivirus (AV) software available for MacOS, Intego is different in that it focuses specifically on the Macintosh family of computers and mobile devices. Founded in France in 1997, it’s latest security suite, the X9 series, is comprised of two barriers: It’s core malware scanner, or VirusBarrier, and firewall known as NetBarrier. Intego offers other useful features, too, including parental control apps like ContentBarrier and Family Protector for iOS; and its Washing Machine utility for performance optimization.
The Intego X9 Series in Action
Installing Intego X9 is easy and gives you access to its VirusBarrier and NetBarrier, at minimum. Higher tiers give you access to additional features, like the ones mentioned above, as well as a bootable Personal Backup for safeguarding important data. On the surface, users will find “arrow overlays” which highlight important areas of the interface useful, especially as they get familiar with how everything works. Mac security software can be rather complex, but Intego overcomes this with a simple user interface.
The main window has real-time scanning enabled by default. There is also an option for scheduled scanning that can be set up by entering a preferred date and time. The scanning process is similar to other AV products in that malicious items are automatically queued for quarantine. Clicking the Quarantine tab will display a list of all the files that were detected, and full logs can be accessed from the top menu bar.
Perhaps one of the most advanced features of Intego X9 is its two-way firewall, which monitors the data that travels to and from your Mac. This, too, is set up by default, indicated by the option “Allow anonymous information to be collected.” Here, data is further reported back to Intego. This preference can be switched off at anytime. To the right of the animated chart which shows external and local network traffic, there are four basic slide switches for filtering ingress and egress traffic.
If you are in search of Mac security tool which consistently scores high in malware detection, then the Intego X9 series is definitely for you. It is very simple to install, set up and use. Though it lacks some detailed options (which may be good for the layperson who has no idea about what they are doing anyway), it proves to have minimal impact on performance and doesn’t slow down your Mac when it is in normal use. It’s lightweight enough for you to enjoy its features, which work tirelessly to secure your computer or device.
